This is a lovely little process called "dumbing down" and it seems to be an epidemic in schools around the world. My friend was telling me the other day that her 5 yr old son is a VERY talented speller... he spells things like hydraulic and binocular. His teacher spells things on the board like "jmp" for jump... so that's what he's been coming home and doing lately.
